    Levada works advanced notably under the governorship of José Silvestre Ribeiro.

    Madeira suffered a severe famine, peaking in February 1847, with high mortality from digestive illness; it also reached Porto Santo. The governor José Silvestre Ribeiro took relief measures, merchants raised funds for food and charity performances were held in Funchal.

    Laureano da Câmara Falcão developed maize cultivation in Santana and São Jorge using Azorean farmers.

    The Funchal Beggars' Asylum was founded in a state warehouse; about 400 inmates moved in procession to the former São Francisco convent on 27 March, and it was definitively installed in the Casa das Angústias on 8 December.

    Linked to the Maria da Fonte movement, Infantry no. 11 and Artillery no. 4 with the Funchal council pronounced for the Junta do Porto and installed a Junta Governativa da Madeira, with António Correia Herédia as secretary, which ruled until 14 July 1847.

    The British frigate Thetis arrived at Funchal demanding the junta's dissolution; the junta dissolved itself on 14 July and British and French commanders restored José Silvestre Ribeiro as civil governor on 26 July.

    D. João Henriques Moniz died of fever in Cape Verde, months after arriving there in February 1847.

    HMS Howe brought Queen Adelaide of England to Funchal, where she resided at Quinta Lambert until 11 April 1848.

    Prince Alexander of the Netherlands arrived in Madeira on the frigate Príncipe de Orange.

    A large theft of silver took place from the church of Ponta Delgada.
