Mangas (Manuel Júlio Tôrres)

Manuel Júlio Tôrres Mangas, born in Funchal in 1835, public official and journalist, son of the civil governor at the time of the 1847 revolt, and author of a biography of Almeida Garrett.

Mangas (Manuel Júlio Tôrres)

He is the son of Colonel Manuel Júlio Torres Mangas, who was civil governor and military commander of Madeira at the time of the revolutionary movement that broke out in this city on the morning of 29 April 1847, proclaiming the principles of the Junta of Porto (see Governing board). Of Manuel Júlio Torres Mangas the younger we know only what Brito Aranha tells us in vol. XVI of the Diccionario Bibliographico. He was born in Funchal in 1835 and held various public offices on the mainland and overseas. He was a journalist and contributed to the Jornal do Porto, Verdade, Ecco Popular, Nacional, Alemtejano and Jardim Literario. He wrote a pamphlet entitled Vida do Visconde de Almeida Garrett, principe dos poetas no século XIX.
