Andrade (Dom Manuel Joaquim Gonçalves de)

Original title: Andrade (D. Manuel Joaquim Gonçalves de)

Short biography of D. Manuel Joaquim Gonçalves de Andrade, a native of Campanário who became bishop of São Paulo in Brazil. He was the uncle of Conselheiro Francisco Justino Gonçalves de Andrade.

This prelate of the diocese of São Paulo (Brazil) was born in the parish (freguesia) of Campanário (‘bell tower’) on 14 March 1767, the son of Nicolau Gonçalves de Andrade and Maria de Andrade. In October 1826 he was confirmed as bishop of that diocese, and he was consecrated on 28 October of the following year. He died on 26 May 1847. We know of no other circumstances of this prelate’s life. He was the uncle of Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Francisco Justino Gonçalves de Andrade, whom we have already discussed in this work.
