Andrade (Canon Dr João Jacinto Gonçalves de)
Original title: Andrade (Cónego Dr. João Jacinto Gonçalves de)
Biography of João Jacinto Gonçalves de Andrade (1825–1898), a priest born in Campanário who emigrated to Brazil, took a doctorate in law at São Paulo and taught there as a professor until 1891.
He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Campanário (‘bell tower’) on 10 February 1825, the son of Lieutenant Francisco Joaquim Gonçalves de Andrade and Dona Caetana Maria de Macedo. He attended the Funchal seminary and was ordained priest. Shortly afterwards he sailed for Brazil, where his uncle Dom Manuel Joaquim Gonçalves de Andrade was a bishop and where his brother, Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Francisco Justino Gonçalves de Andrade, was a distinguished professor at the University of São Paulo. He settled in Vassouras and was carrying out his ministry there when, on the advice of Dr Francisco Justino, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo and took his doctorate there. Shortly afterwards he sat a competitive examination for one of its chairs and was appointed professor, a post he held until 1891, when he retired.
He was a man of broad learning and taught at the university with distinction, although he could not match the high intellectual gifts and profound knowledge, above all in the legal sciences, of his brother Dr Francisco Justino Gonçalves de Andrade, whom we have already discussed on p. 68 of this Elucidario. Dr João Jacinto de Andrade never gave up his ecclesiastical duties, to which he always devoted himself with deep love. He was an exemplary priest and as such enjoyed remarkable prestige in the city of São Paulo, where he lived for many years and where he died on 16 January 1898.
