Andrade Corvo (João de)
João de Andrade Corvo, writer and scientist, visited Madeira in 1853 for the Lisbon Academy of Sciences to study the vine disease (mangra) and published memoirs on Madeira and Porto Santo.
This distinguished writer and man of science was in Madeira in 1853, commissioned by the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa) to study the disease called mangra (powdery mildew of the vine, oidium), which was then invading the vineyards of this island and destroyed a large part of them. As a result of his work he published the Memórias sobre as Ilhas da Madeira e Porto Santo.
In the first memoir he promised the publication of two more, which never appeared. Andrade Corvo arrived on this island on 29 July 1853 and stayed here until the middle of the following September.
