Mustard

Original title: Mostarda

Mustard plants in Madeira: Brassica sinapistrum and B. nigra, both wild and frequent, while condiment mustard mostly comes from the rare Sinapis alba.

Two crucifers are known by this name in Madeira: Brassica Sinapistrum and B. nigra. It is the latter species that produces the seeds whose flour is used to prepare mustard plasters. B. nigra has siliques with 1-nerved valves; B. Sinapistrum has siliques with 3–5-nerved valves. Both species grow wild and are frequent in Madeira. Mustard used as a condiment comes mainly from Sinapis alba, a very rare species in Madeira.
