Mosquitoes

Original title: Mosquitos

Mosquitoes of the archipelago, chiefly Culex longiareolatus in Madeira, with Culex pipiens recorded only in Porto Santo.

Insects of the order Diptera, some of them very abundant. The mosquito that seems commonest in Madeira is Culex longiareolatus, which lives near wells and tanks, where its larvae breed. It sometimes enters bedrooms, and its buzzing is quite a nuisance. Culex pipiens has been recorded on Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), but not on Madeira.

The bite of Culex longiareolatus causes itching and sometimes a passing oedema.
