Saramago

Explains that the name saramago refers to wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) on Madeira and to a wild mustard (Brassica) on Porto Santo, both common crucifers.

The saramago of Madeira is Raphanus raphanistrum, with jointed silicles and white or yellow flowers; that of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) is Brassica sinapistrum, a plant known on Madeira as mostarda (mustard). Both plants belong to the family Cruciferae and are common on the two islands.
