Cane juice (garapa)

Original title: Garapa

Definition of garapa, sugar-cane juice, with yields for aguardente distilling.

Cane juice (garapa) is the juice produced by pressing sugar cane. In the factories that produce spirit (aguardente, distilled from sugar cane or wine) it is reckoned that 30 kilograms of cane are needed to obtain one almude (old liquid measure, about 17.5 litres) (171) of cane juice, and that this almude of cane juice produces 5 to 6 quartilhas of spirit at 26 degrees Cartier (an old hydrometer scale of alcoholic strength).
