Portuguese infante, later King Luís I, who first visited Madeira in 1858, when he attended the founding of the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Instrução Primária and became its protector. He commanded the corvette Bartolomeu Dias escorting the Empress of Austria on her departure in 1861.
