Bando (public proclamation)

Original title: Bando

Explains the 'bando', the public proclamation by which government and municipal orders were announced to the people of Funchal by a crier accompanied by a bugler. The last one in Funchal was held for the funeral rites of King Luís I.

The public proclamation (bando) was the public announcement by which the people were informed of the orders of the Government and of the municipalities. The town crier, who in the case of municipal orders was the Council usher (porteiro da câmara), went out accompanied by a bugler from the regiment, who sounded his bugle through the streets of the city to call the people to come and hear these orders. The public notice (edital) was read aloud by the usher and then posted up in the customary places. The last time a public proclamation was made in Funchal was on the occasion of the funeral rites of Luís I.
