Pacheco (Canon António Aires)
Original title: Pacheco (Cónego António Aires)
Biography of Canon António Aires Pacheco (b. 1854), celebrated preacher, rector of the Funchal seminary, canon of Funchal and later Lisbon cathedral, and polemical editor of the newspaper A Verdade.
He is a canon of Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) and is regarded as one of the most distinguished Portuguese preachers. He was born on 15 September 1854 in Vilarouco, in the district of Viseu. He came to Madeira in 1877 with the late prelate Dom Manuel Agostinho Barreto, and took the theology course at the seminary (Seminário) of this city, being ordained priest in 1881. For some years he was a teacher and rector of the Diocesan Seminary. In 1888 he was presented as a canon of our Cathedral (Sé Catedral), and some years later he was transferred to the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon.
As editor of the newspaper A Verdade (‘Truth’), which he directed for some years, he proved a brilliant and vigorous journalist, distinguishing himself in his writings above all as a skilful polemicist. In reply to the pamphlet O Sudário Negro, he published in 1882 a pamphlet of 54 pp. entitled O Sudário Negro no banco dos réus. In 1890 the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) published the funeral oration that Canon Aires Pacheco delivered in the Cathedral at the funeral rites of King Luís I. He left Madeira in 1890.
