Town Plans

Original title: Plantas da Cidade

An account of the maps and city plans of Funchal, from Skinner's small plan of 1775 and Vidal's plan of 1843 to the municipal survey completed in 1895 and its later reductions and derivatives.

Town Plans

Plans of Funchal

Captain Vidal’s Funchal Bay, published in 1843, shows the plan of Funchal at that time, and William Johnston’s map of Madeira, published in 1775, has attached to it a small-scale plan of the city surveyed by Captain Skinner. The first of these works served as the basis for all the charts of Funchal later published in various foreign works on Madeira.

On 2 April 1893 the Council opened a 60-day tender for the award by public auction (arrematação) of the work of surveying the city plan. The work was awarded to the Consultório de Engenharia, whose members included the engineers Carlos Roma Machado de Faria e Maia and Adriano Augusto Trigo. The plan was completed in 1895 and cost the municipality about 9 contos de réis (conto: one million réis), a sum that was finally paid off on 16 May of the same year.

The drawing boards of the city plan are kept in an iron safe bought by the Council for that purpose.

On 6 September 1897 the Council resolved to acquire, for 700,000 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis), a reduction of the said plan made by the engineer C. Roma e Maia. A copy of this reduction was sent shortly afterwards to the engineers of the District Public Works Department (Direção das Obras Públicas), who were then in charge of the studies for the city’s water supply and sewerage, while the original was filed in the relevant municipal department.

Other copies were later made of this reduced plan. One of them, or its original, served as the basis for the Guia Panoramico da Madeira, published some years ago by Dr Luís Rodrigues Gaspar and Francisco Bento de Gouveia, and for the Planta da cidade de Funchal contendo todos os melhoramentos realisados até 1911, drawn up by the engineers Adriano A. Trigo and Aníbal A. Trigo
