Skipjack tuna (Thynnus pelamys)

Original title: Gaiado (Thynnus pelamys)

The skipjack tuna, a seasonal migrant fish in Madeira, caught by line and eaten dried or canned as tuna conserve for export.

A fish of the family Scombridae, a seasonal visitor to Madeira, chiefly in summer and autumn. It is extremely abundant in some years and is generally eaten after being salted and dried in the sun. It is caught with a line and, like the other species of the genus Thynnus, is used to prepare so-called tuna conserve, which Madeira exports in large quantities to Portugal. In some parts of Portugal the skipjack tuna (gaiado) is also known as bonito.
