Guelro (Atherina presbyter)

The guelro (Atherina presbyter) is a small silverside fish common in Madeiran waters, used mainly as bait, especially in fishing for skipjack (gaiado).

A small fish of the family Atherinidae, common in the seas of the archipelago. In the hot season it gathers in dense shoals in coastal waters and in the rock pools along the shore. It is a tasty fish but seldom appears at market, as fishermen usually use it as bait and groundbait. Its chief use is in fishing for skipjack tuna (gaiado).
