Dix (John)
John Dix was an American author of 'A Winter in Madeira and a Summer in Spain and Florence' (New York, 1850). The Elucidário considers it one of the fairest foreign accounts of Madeira.
Works: A Winter in Madeira and a Summer in Spain and Florence, New York, 1850, 1 vol. This work was partly translated by J. de Meneses, under the following title: Um inverno na Madeira, California, 1896, 1 vol. At the end, this translation carries some short notes clarifying the text, which the translator says are the work of a distinguished Madeiran writer. Dix’s book, despite whatever inaccuracies and mistaken judgements it may contain, is one of the foreign works written about Madeira in which the author shows the greatest impartiality and the greatest desire to be fair to Madeiran things and people.
