Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus)
Original title: Chagas (Tropaeolum majus)
Nasturtium, an American plant naturalised around Funchal, whose pickled fruits substitute for capers and leaves make salad.
A plant of the Tropaeolaceae family, fully naturalised in Funchal and its outskirts. It is native to America, and its fruits, picked young and put in vinegar, can replace capers. The English make a salad of its flowers and tender leaves, and these parts of the plant can also be used as an antiscorbutic remedy. True capers are the flower buds of Capparis spinosa, a species unknown in Madeira.
