Rye, grown in Madeira and Porto Santo for dark bread and for straw used in hat-making; about 2,500 hectolitres are produced yearly.
An annual grass grown in Madeira and Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). Rye flour, alone or mixed with wheat flour, is used to make a dark but tasty bread, and the straw of the plant is used in hat-making. The archipelago produces around 2,500 hectolitres of rye a year.
