Main article Ilhéu The islet at the western end of Funchal harbour, known simply as 'the Ilhéu', site of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição fortress, a harbour light and a signal station, and joined to the shore in 1890 by the Pontinha breakwater. The entry also discusses early accounts of the two islets seen by the discoverers.

An islet known simply as the Ilhéu, with a fishermen's quarter said to have escaped the 1856 cholera and a semaphore post. The steamer Valente was imprudently left anchored close to it as a storm began. The Ilhéu's own entry describes an islet at the western end of Funchal harbour with a fortress and harbour light, joined to the shore in 1890.
