Valente (steamship)

Original title: Valente (Vapor)

The Valente was the first steamship used in Madeira's coastal service, arriving in Funchal from England in 1872 and wrecked in a southerly storm in 1876.

The first steam vessel used in the coastal service of this island was the so-called Vapor Valente, which arrived in Funchal from England on 1 September 1872 and ran aground on 11 November 1876. It was imprudently left anchored close to the shore by the Ilhéu (‘islet’) just as a violent storm from the south was beginning to blow; it was driven against the coast below the Quinta Lambert, where it was completely destroyed.
