Vinho de canteiro

Vinho de canteiro is the Madeiran name for wine aged naturally in the cellar without being heated in an estufa; it was this wine that built the island's reputation as a wine country.

In Madeira this is the name given to wine that does not go into the estufa (heated store for ageing Madeira wine) and instead undergoes its natural ageing in the cellar. It was to this wine, improved by the action of time, that the island owed its reputation as a wine-producing country. Vinho de canteiro, the wine of the canteiro system (natural ageing of the wine in casks on wooden supports, without artificial heating), is sometimes used in making other types of wine.
