Telegraphs
Original title: Telégrafos
Lists the optical signalling telegraph stations that existed in Madeira before the electric cable arrived.
When the electric cable was established in Madeira, the following telegraphs existed here, communicating with one another by signals: that of Pico do Facho (‘beacon peak’), in Machico, that of Pico da Água, in Caniço (‘reed’), and Pico da Cruz (‘peak of the cross’), in São Martinho.
In earlier times, we know that telegraphs existed at Câmara de Lobos, at Ponta do Pargo and at Garajau, the last of these operating from 1839 to 1847.
