Thomson (Sir William)

Sir William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, came to Madeira in 1874 for the submarine telegraph link and married Frances Anne Blandy in Funchal.

This distinguished English man of science, who was given the title of Lord Kelvin in 1892, was in Madeira in 1874, when the island was linked to Brazil and Portugal by submarine telegraph. While here he married Miss Francis Ana Blandy, daughter of the English merchant Carlos Blandy. The wedding took place at the British consulate in Funchal on 24 June 1874; W. Thomson was then 49 years old and already a widower, and his bride was 36.
