Brief note on the Teles surname in Madeira and its Meneses lineage.
It is a surname of good families, but it is not known who brought it to this island. In 1682 António Teles, or António Telo de Meneses, founder of the chapel of St Anthony of Padua in Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’), was living in Madeira.
The Teles de Meneses family descends from Vasco Moniz de Meneses and also, through illegitimacy, from the Counts of Vila Pouca.
