It is one of the oldest streets in Funchal and links Rua do Comércio, or Rua dos Ferreiros (‘blacksmiths’), with Rua da Alfândega. At a session of the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) on 6 July 1922 it was given the somewhat vague name of ‘Rua 17 de Junho de 1922’, because that was the date on which the daring aviators Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral completed their flight between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro.

Chronology
  • Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral completed their Lisbon–Rio de Janeiro flight, and Funchal celebrated their arrival from 17 to 20 June.
  • Funchal council renamed streets in honour of the aviators, naming one 'rua 17 de Junho de 1922' and the Pontinha road rua Sacadura Cabral.
