Sá Pereira (João António de)

Captain-general of Madeira (1767–77), a relative of Pombal who fought abuses and was later made Baron of Alverca.

He was appointed captain-general (capitão-general, military governor of Madeira) of Madeira in 1766, but did not take up the post until 9 December of the following year. His administration was a good one.

As we have already seen on page 101 of this volume, he sought to put an end to many abuses practised in Madeira, and for that reason his enemies celebrated his departure from this island with illuminations and fireworks. He left on 10 June 1777, after the fall of the Marquis of Pombal, to whom he was related. His services having been recognised by the new government, he was granted the title of Baron of Alverca.
