Captain-general of Madeira from 1767 to 1777 and a relative of Pombal, called the 'Madeiran Pombal' for his reforms and his fight against abuses. His measures included a ban on mixing north and south wines, the ordering of the 1771 map of the island and the enforcement of the 1770 law in Porto Santo; he was later made Baron of Alverca.
