School of Geometry and Trigonometry
Original title: Escola de Geometria e Trigonometria
A school of geometry and trigonometry for military careers founded in Funchal in 1760 in the Jesuit College.
At the end of 1760 a School of Geometry and Trigonometry (Escola de Geometria e Trigonometria), intended especially for those following a military career, was established in Funchal. It was housed in the Jesuit College (Colégio dos Jesuítas), today the barracks of the 19th Infantry Battalion, and its first teachers were the sergeant-major (sargento-mor, a field officer ranking as major) Francisco de Alincourt and the engineer Francisco Salustiano da Costa. Nine years later, that is, in 1769, the governor and captain-general João António de Sá Pereira reported to the government in mainland Portugal the good results obtained from the school. We do not know when it ceased to exist, nor any other circumstances concerning it.

Former Jesuit college in Funchal, whose Aulas do Pátio housed secondary teaching and later the lyceum, and which also housed the Escola de Geometria e Trigonometria. It housed the diocesan seminary from 1788 to 1801, was disputed between bishop and governor as seminary or barracks, and was occupied by British troops in 1801. It later served as an infantry barracks, and its enclosure ceded land to widen the Rua do Castanheiro.
