Murças (street)
Original title: Murças (Rua dos)
A Funchal street running from Rua do Sabão to Avenida Gonçalves Zarco, said to be named after the murças (capes) worn by cathedral canons who once lived there.
It is said in some quarters that the name comes from the fact that certain canons of our Funchal Cathedral (Sé) once lived in this street. When performing their liturgical duties, canons wear the so-called murças (short capes), an insignia reserved for members of cathedral chapters. The street runs from Rua do Sabão to Avenida Gonçalves Zarco. Part of it was originally called Rua do Capitão (see that entry).
