Red scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa)
Original title: Peixe-Carneiro (Scorpaena scrofa)
The red scorpionfish, common in Madeiran seas, with venomous head spines and palatable white flesh.
A fish of the family Triglidae, common in Madeiran seas. It varies greatly in colour and has an oddly shaped head that sets this species apart from all others that come to market. The skull bristles with spiny projections, some of which exude a venom secreted by special glands in the head. A prick from one of these spines can have serious consequences.
The peixe-carneiro is sedentary in habit and lives on rocky bottoms. Its flesh is white and somewhat tough, but pleasant in flavour.
