Abrotea do Baixo (Phycis mediterranea)

Common solitary gadid fish of Madeiran rocky bottoms, sold all year and valued for its white, digestible flesh.

The abrotea do Baixo, or simply abrotea, is a fish of the seas of Madeira, of the gadid family. It is common, appearing in the markets throughout the year. It is solitary in habit, living on rocky bottoms, where it is usually caught with the briqueira (a Madeiran hand line for bottom fishing). It is esteemed for its white, delicate and easily digestible flesh.
