Mantegazza (Paulo)
Paolo Mantegazza, Italian writer and psychologist, wrote the romantic fiction 'Uma pagina de Amor (Um dia na Madeira)', the most reprinted work referring to Madeira, translated into Portuguese by Henrique Braga.
A few years ago, some time after 1905, a translation by Henrique Braga was published in Lisbon of the work by the illustrious Italian writer and psychologist Paulo Mantegazza entitled Uma pagina de Amor (Um dia na Madeira). As a whole it is a work of pure fiction, but it contains some interesting pages on Madeira that deserve to be read, especially for the beauty of the language and the originality of the plot. The translation was made from the 24th Italian edition. Of all works containing references to this archipelago, it is the one that has run to the greatest number of editions, owing solely to the author’s celebrated name and to the passionate love story that unfolds throughout the book. The book closes with a short account of Madeira and a chapter reviewing various works dealing with this island. Both are of some interest, despite the inaccuracies they contain.
