Map: Madeira (5)

Several localities (sítios) in Madeira are known by this name, but the one most worth visiting is in the parish (freguesia) of Santo da Serra (‘the saint of the uplands’).

The locality of Lamaceiros (‘mud flats’) in Porto Moniz (‘Moniz’s harbour’) is also worth a visit. From some nearby peaks part of the Ribeira da Janela (‘window stream’) can be seen. There is a chapel there dedicated to St Peter (São Pedro), badly damaged by the earthquake of 1748 and rebuilt shortly afterwards; it was restored once again a few years ago.

Chronology
  • On the night of 31 March to 1 April 1748 a violent earthquake struck Madeira, causing few deaths but heavy damage to buildings, including the cathedral, the bishops' palace, the customs house, the Monte church, the Mosteiro Novo house and numerous chapels and parish churches.
