Islet beacon

Original title: Farolim do Ilhéu

Short entry on the small fixed-light beacon on the islet at Funchal harbour, known as 'a brasa do ilhéu', in service from 1866 until replaced in 1931.

Map: Madeira (2)

This was a small fixed-light lighthouse of little illuminating power, which not so long ago was often called a brasa do ilhéu (‘the ember of the islet’). It served as a landmark for vessels making for the port of Funchal and came into service on 18 May 1866.

It was replaced by a new lighthouse on 1 August 1931.

Chronology
  • A small fixed red harbour light on the Ilhéu at Funchal began operating.
  • The beacon on the Ilhéu at Pontinha, Funchal, was replaced by a proper lighthouse.
