Anjos
A fertile coastal locality in the parish of Canhas, named after the old chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, once part of the parish of Ponta do Sol.
This locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Canhas takes its name from the chapel of Our Lady of the Angels (Nossa Senhora dos Anjos). The chapel is of considerable age and was built, according to some, by order of the Infanta Dona Beatriz, as guardian of her son, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cristo), to which Madeira belonged in spiritual matters; according to others, it was built by Martins Afonso in 1508. The image venerated in this chapel was the object of great devotion, and Friar Agostinho de Santa Maria discusses it in vol. X of his Santuário Mariano. The locality of Anjos, which is exceptionally fertile and forms the coastal strip of the parish of Canhas, was once part of the parish of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’).
