Gama (Arnaldo)

The well-known novelist Arnaldo Gama (1828–1869) wrote, among other books, the novel A Caldeira de Pêro Botelho, whose plot is largely set on this island; some of its characters are also natives of Madeira, notably the noblemen Diogo and Pêro Botelho. On the sources he used for weaving this historical novel, Arnaldo Gama says in a final note to his book: ‘In closing, I must say that the story of the love of Diogo Botelho and Dona Beatriz, as well as that of the Caldeira de Pêro Botelho, were taken from the Relação de uma viagem a Espanha, written by Tomé Pinheiro da Veiga, who is said to be the author of the famous ‘The Art of Stealing’ (Arte de Furtar); the manuscript of this account is owned by Mr António Rodrigues da Cruz Coutinho, proprietor and publisher of this book.’
