Gama
The Gama surname in Madeira, apparently introduced by Dr Lourenço Vaz Pereira da Gama, provedor of the deceased and absent in the early sixteenth century.
Dr Lourenço Vaz Pereira da Gama appears to have been the first on this island to use this family surname. He came to Madeira at the beginning of the 16th century to hold the post of commissioner for the estates of the dead and absent (provedor de defuntos e ausentes). He was the father of Dr António da Gama, whom we discuss in this Elucidário.
