Art of Stealing

Original title: Arte de Furtar

Note on the anonymous 'Arte de Furtar', whose author seems to have been in Madeira under Bishop-governor Jerónimo Fernando (1624–1634); not by António Vieira.

The author of this work seems to have been in Madeira, for he mentions several events that took place here while Bishop Dom Jerónimo Fernando was governor-general of the archipelago, that is, between 1624 and 1634.

‘The Art of Stealing’ (Arte de Furtar), which many have sought to attribute to Father António Vieira, is not his work, but that of a writer of merit who knew how to imitate the style and phrasing of the celebrated Portuguese Jesuit.
