Swallow
Original title: Andorinha
Explains that the Madeiran name andorinha (swallow) is improperly applied to two native swifts, and gives local names for true swallows visiting the islands.
A name improperly given to two birds native to Madeira, Micropus apus and M. unicolor. The first is called andorinha do mar (‘sea swallow’), the second andorinha da serra (‘mountain swallow’). The true swallows, Hirundo rustica and Chelidonaria urbica, which visit these islands regularly without breeding, are known on Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) as andorinhas de fora (‘swallows from outside’) and in some parishes in the north of Madeira as andorinhas do Porto Santo (‘Porto Santo swallows’), perhaps because on reaching the northern coast of Madeira they arrive from the north-east, that is, from the direction of Porto Santo.
