The artichoke, a plant of the daisy family grown in some Madeiran vegetable gardens for its edible flower heads.

A plant of the family Compositae, cultivated in some vegetable gardens in Madeira. The receptacle of its very large flower heads and the fleshy part of the bracts of the involucre are eaten cooked and have a pleasant flavour.
