Celery (Apium graveolens)

Wild celery, an umbellifer frequent in Madeira and Porto Santo, with medicinal and culinary uses; garden celery is absent.

An annual or biennial plant of the family Umbelliferae, frequent in Madeira and on Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). Its basal leaves are pinnatisect or 3-sect, with broad segments, and the stem leaves 3-sect or entire; its umbels are sessile or short-stalked, without involucre or involucel, and its fruits are subglobose. The root and fruits of celery are diuretic and stimulant, and the leaves and stalks can be eaten in soup or salad. Garden celery is not found in the archipelago.
