The Confederate raider Alabama called at Funchal and sheltered off Porto Santo for repairs during the American Civil War.
This famous privateer, in the service of the insurgents of the South of the Republic of the United States of America during the civil war that broke out in that country, called at the port of Funchal and then sheltered off the coast of the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) to repair damage, having fled the relentless pursuit of several ships loyal to the Northern government.
