White lupin (Lupinus albus)
Original title: Tremoceiro (Lupinus albus)
The white lupin is a leguminous plant widely grown in Madeira, both for its seeds, which must be debittered by boiling and soaking, and as green manure to fertilise the soil.
A papilionaceous legume widely cultivated in Madeira. To rid the seeds of the white lupin of their bitterness, they must be boiled in water containing some ash and charcoal, and then steeped in water for about eight days, the water being changed twice a day. People also put the lupin seeds in sacks in the running water of streams, which considerably shortens the work of preparing them. The white lupin is much used to fertilise the land, and is often grown for that purpose alone.
