Travessa do Porto Santo
The Travessa is the popular name for the stretch of sea, about 27 miles long, between Madeira (Ilhéu de Fora off Ponta de São Lourenço) and Porto Santo (Ilhéu de Baixo or da Cal). It is known for storms and generally rough seas.
The stretch of channel or sea between the islands of Madeira (Ilhéu de Fora (‘outer islet’), off Ponta de São Lourenço (‘St Lawrence Point’)) and Porto Santo (Ilhéu de Baixo (‘lower islet’), or Ilhéu da Cal) is popularly known as the Travessa (‘crossing’). It is about 27 miles long. Violent storms often break out there, and the sea in these waters is generally rough.
