– On 1 November 1923 the foundation stone was laid of the grand monument erected at the Terreiro da Luta (‘ground of the fight’), in the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’), in honour of the Blessed Virgin (Santíssima Virgem) under the dedication of Nossa Senhora da Paz. It consists of an exquisite marble statue set on a plinth flanked by artistic bronze bas-reliefs, which allude to the traditional belief that the Blessed Virgin appeared on that very spot. Beside the monument stands a small and elegant chapel, where the holy sacrifice of the Mass and other acts of worship are frequently celebrated. The erection of this monument is due to the ardent zeal and untiring efforts of Father José Marques Jardim, who spared no sacrifice to give it the imposing and grand appearance that distinguishes it, even travelling abroad to collect donations to bring the work to completion. The formal inauguration, held with the greatest pomp and attended by thousands of people from every part of the island, took place under the presidency of the diocesan prelate on 14 August 1927.
