Fundoa
Locality in São Roque, Funchal, with a 1668 chapel, a former Jesuit residence and an 1817 water reservoir and aqueduct.
An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of São Roque (‘St Roch’), Funchal. In this locality, on the right bank of the Ribeira de Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’s stream’), stands the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary (Nossa Senhora do Rosário), built by João da Paz de Castro in 1668. The Jesuits had a residence there, with a private chapel and surrounding land.
This locality was also the site of an important reservoir of drinking water, which an extensive aqueduct carried to the centre of the city, chiefly to supply the old Misericórdia Hospital (Hospital da Misericórdia) and other buildings. It was built in 1817 on the orders of the then president (provedor) of the Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy, a lay charitable brotherhood), Bishop Dom Friar Joaquim de Meneses e Ataíde, under the direction of the engineer Paulo Dias de Almeida, and at the time it was considered a valuable work from a technical point of view.
