District Council

Original title: Conselho de Distrito

A district tribunal chaired by the civil governor with four members, holding advisory and contentious powers, abolished by the 1886 Administrative Code.

This was a tribunal composed of the civil governor, as president, and four members appointed by the Government from a list of three names for each seat proposed by the District General Council (Junta Geral). It had advisory and contentious powers, and was abolished by the Administrative Code of 17 July 1886.

The members of the District Council received an annual allowance of 240,000 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis), paid from the District Treasury.

Chronology
  • The Administrative Code of 1886 maintained and expanded parish councils, created the Tribunais Administrativos and abolished the district council, prompting attempts to install parish councils in Madeira.
