Caramujo
Upland locality in São Vicente at 1,325 m, near the Paul da Serra, with a shelter house and the springs of the Ribeira do Inferno levada; possibly an old crater.
A locality in the municipality (concelho) and parish (freguesia) of São Vicente, 1325 metres above sea level. It has a mountain shelter built by the District Public Works Department (Direção das Obras Públicas do Distrito), and close by are the springs of the Levada da Ribeira do Inferno (‘hell’s stream’), a levada (irrigation channel) that irrigates land in the parish of São Vicente. Following this levada to its source, one enjoys views of astonishing beauty.
Caramujo (‘sea snail’), or Chão do Caramujo, lies a short distance from the northern edge of the Paul da Serra (‘upland marsh’) and appears once to have been the crater of a volcano. It is a spot much visited by Portuguese and foreigners alike.
