Inferno (stream)
Original title: Inferno (Ribeira do)
A stream rising in the mountains of São Vicente parish and forming its boundary with Seixal before reaching the sea; its gorge contains some of Madeira's most dramatic scenery and its water feeds a levada irrigating São Vicente.
It rises in the mountains of the parish (freguesia) of São Vicente (‘St Vincent’) and separates that parish from the parish of Seixal (‘pebble shore’) before flowing into the ocean. Along the banks of this stream and in its inner reaches lie some of the most breathtaking scenery in our island, where one frequently comes upon the most fearsome and deepest precipices. The water of this stream feeds a levada (irrigation channel), which irrigates the land of the parish of São Vicente.
