On a solitary block of basalt at the mouth of the stream that crosses the town (vila) of São Vicente, the local people built a chapel in 1692, according to Dr Alvaro de Azevedo. It is dedicated to the martyr St Vincent of Saragossa, who is also the patron saint of the parish church, which stands a short distance away. This unusual little chapel is widely known through the engravings of it reproduced in various Portuguese and foreign works, and also through postcards.
